Currently in the Twin Cities — August 13, 2024: More days in the 80s

Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever

The weather, currently.

More days in the 80s

We finally cracked 80 degrees meanwhile in the Twin Cities on Monday. That’s the warmest day in 8 days. We’ll see highs again in the low 80s Tuesday with lots of sun. Muggier air is back for Wednesday and that will help set the stage for some showers, thunder later in the day into Thursday as the next disturbance takes advantage of the increased moisture.

The recent ‘cool snap’ was the result of an Arctic heat wave last week. That anomalous warmth pushed deep into Alaska and northwest Canada, dislodging cool air toward Minnesota. Highs reached 95 degrees near Ft. McPherson and Inuvik, both above the Arctic circle.

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
