Currently in the Twin Cities — August 14, 2024: Stormy in the evening

Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever

The weather, currently.

Storms moving in Wednesday evening

If you’re not a fan of muggy air, I have some news for you. Dew points will return to the muggy 60s Wednesday for the first time in more than a week.

Much of Wednesday will be dry for eastern Minnesota but by evening scattered showers and thunderstorms will be moving in. It looks like the wettest period will be in the overnight Wednesday night. We could see a widespread 1 to 2 inches of rainfall.

Thursday and Friday will see lingering instability in the form of pop-up, spotty storms in the afternoons. The weekend is shaping up to be pretty nice.

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
