Currently in the Twin Cities — August 22, 2024: One last nice day before weekend heat wave
Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever
The weather, currently.
One last nice day before weekend heat wave
Thursday will still be comfortable with temperatures in the 70s and dew points still in the pleasant 50s. Clouds will be on the increase as the next disturbance brings showers and some thunder mainly to northern and western Minnesota. We could see a stray afternoon shower but most activity will come in the overnight Thursday night, and it won’t be much.
Steamy air then quickly moves in for the weekend. Highs will still be near 90 Sunday and Monday with dew points in the low 70s by Sunday. Cooler, fall-like air arrives late next week.
What you can do, currently.
A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.
Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
