Currently in the Twin Cities — August 23, 2024: Muggy with a few random showers

Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever

The weather, currently.

Muggy with a few random showers

We’ll have some scattered showers on and off into the overnight with perhaps some showers early Friday. Clouds will decrease Friday with the potential of a ‘pop-up,’ instability-driven thundershower in the afternoon. You’ll notice the return of the muggy air Friday.

Saturday will be warmer, in the mid 80s, muggy and with sunshine and dry weather. Sunday and Monday are still on track to reach 90 degrees. The heat index Sunday could reach 100 as dew points climb to some of the highest levels of the summer, in the mid 70s. Isolated thunder is possible Monday with temperatures gradually cooling off next week.

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
