Currently in the Twin Cities — August 27, 2024: Storms winding down

Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever

The weather, currently.

Storms winding down

The first of multiple cool fronts spawned multiple rounds of severe storms Monday evening and overnight. If you were at the Twins game at Target Field, I hope you made it out OK — the weather there was unearthly.

Behind the front on Tuesday and Wednesday it’ll be cooler and less humid, but still above normal and still a bit sticky. The next cool front will touch off scattered showers Thursday and drop temps and dew points further for the Labor Day Weekend.

We ticked off our 7th 90 degree day Monday in the Twin Cities. Normal to date is about 10 and of course last year we had many more (33 in total). The heat index reached triple digits as well.

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
