Currently in the Twin Cities — August 5, 2024: A round of storms
Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever
The weather, currently.
A round of potentially strong storms
Strong storms blew through Saturday night prompting a few tornado warnings. A confirmed tornado touchdown was spotted near Melrose along I-94 just after 8 p.m. Saturday.
While I don’t expect weather quite that rough Monday, there’s the possibility of strong storms for southeast Minnesota (mainly south of the Twin Cities) late Monday. Statewide, we’ll see scattered showers and thunderstorms making for a soggy Monday.
Behind the system it will be cooler and pleasant with highs in the 70s all week and sunny skies Tuesday. Temperatures should rebound sometime next week toward normal (near 80), but we’ll be below normal in the meantime.
What you can do, currently.
A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.
Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
