Currently in the Twin Cities — August 8, 2024: Fall like weather!
Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever
The weather, currently.
Fall like weather!
Fall-like air for Thursday and Friday will usher in quite the opposite weather. Highs will struggle to reach 70, readings more typical for the last week of September. It could be the coolest day since June 20th. That was the last time we had a sub-70 degree high in the Twin Cities.
The National Weather Service has confirmed (at least) 4 tornadoes touched down Monday evening from St. James to the Minnesota/Iowa border. All four were EF-1s ranging from 100 to 105 mph winds. Two of the tornadoes tracked for more than 6 miles, which is unusual for Minnesota.
What you can do, currently.
A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.
Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
