Currently in the Twin Cities — July 22, 2024: Stormy weather continues

Plus, independent climate journalism needs your support, now more than ever

The weather, currently.

Stormy weather continues

There were localized pockets of heavy rainfall thanks to spotty weekend storms once again. Portions of Saint Paul saw over 2 inches of rainfall Sunday morning and parts of central and northern Minnesota saw over 2 inches as well: McGregor and Alexandria both surpassed 2 inches.

We remain unsettled Monday and Tuesday as a couple more disturbances move through. Look for afternoon spotty storms each day. Behind a cool front Tuesday, dew points will drop helping to stabilize things. Wednesday through Saturday look dry with lots of sun. We’ll be heating up heading into the last weekend of July.

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
