Currently in the Twin Cities — July 9, 2024: A few pop-up showers possible

We’ll have some lingering instability yet Tuesday and Wednesday with a few more isolated, pop-up afternoon showers possible. Highs Tuesday should be in the low to mid 80s, right near the normal high of 84.

The pattern is moving more slowly thanks to the remnants of Beryl that will be drifting east. Overall drier weather and hotter temperatures are still on track as the week progresses. Highs by Saturday and Sunday will be 90+ with heat index values Sunday in the mid to upper 90s.

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
